This All-New, Research-Based* Series:
• Trains Who, What, Where, Why, How, With What, and Yes/No Questions
• Covers Paired Questions and How to Answer Questions Exhaustively
• Teaches Both the Syntax and Semantics of Many Forms of Questions

Suggested for Individuals (Pre-K through Adult) with:
• Autism, intellectual and developmental disabilities, language-learning disabilities, low vision, and hearing impairments,
• Also English language learners (Pre-K-6)

Product Description:
Most children with language disorders have difficulty understanding, answering, and asking questions. Deficits in the ability to ask and answer questions can have a serious impact on students’ communication development as well as their classroom performance.

program coversQuestionQuest® is a new three-level series which offers research-based intervention to help children master understanding and answering questions (Who, What, Where, Why, How, With What, and Yes/No). This program systematically trains both the syntactic and semantic aspects of different types of questions.

A Variety of Question Forms
Students who are learning to understand and respond to questions need to learn many syntactic subtleties. For example, they need to know whether a question refers to the subject or the object of a sentence (Who is painting? Who is the father painting?). They also need to discriminate between Yes/No and Wh-Questions.

QuestionQuest screenshotIn addition, students must understand the various semantic meanings of questions. For example, the question “How did the girl break the piñata?” most likely requires an instrument answer “…with a bat” while “How is the girl dancing?” requires a manner response “…on her toes.” Similarly, the question “Why is the girl sad?” requires a cause response “…because her balloon got away,” while the question “Why is the boy filling the washtub?” requires a purpose answer like “…to wash the dog.”

Students must also learn that when more than one person is involved in an activity, a question such as “Who is washing the car?” requires an exhaustive response where all of the participants are named. Similarly, when a scene is described as “Everyone is reading something and eating something,” the response to “Who is reading what and eating what?” requires pairing all of the actors with what they are reading and what they are eating.

Automatic Lesson Delivery
Students in inclusionary settings can use QuestionQuest independently in their classrooms. Using Laureate’s Optimized Intervention technology, the program begins with an assessment to determine where to start training. As the student works, the software continually monitors responses, adjusts the instructional support accordingly, and automatically guides the student through the curriculum. Extensive data collection and built-in reports document student performance and ensure accountability.

QuestionQuest: Facilitating Syntax and Pragmatics through Optimized Software*

Smith, S., Pereira, M., Ravina, R., Carr, C., Ackai, L., & deVilliers, P.

Teachers pre-tested 14 oral deaf children with language delays using a 15 item Wh-Question elicited production test.1 The children then used QuestionQuest for 30 minutes per day, usually 3 times a week.

Research chart

• At post-test, scores on the Wh-Question elicited production test more than doubled; a difference that was highly significant.

• Improvements were evident across a range of initial ability. Some children who did not produce Wh-Questions on the pre-test did so after training. Others with initially limited production of Wh-Questions expanded their repertoire.

These results indicate that using QuestionQuest was an effective way to provide children with the critical language input they needed to improve their abilities to understand, ask, and answer questions.
