Receptive Language Software Really Works!

Why is receptive language training such an important component of language theory and research-based intervention? Research has shown that language is acquired through listening, not speaking. Linguist Steven Pinker (1994, p. 280) stated this succinctly when he wrote,

“It is not surprising that grammar development does not depend on overt practice, because actually saying something aloud as opposed to listening to what other people say, does not provide the child with information about the language he or she is trying to learn.”

Research has also shown that receptive language intervention software works. Significantly improved language development and communication skills have been documented when regular use of language intervention software was added to the ongoing curriculum in special education classrooms.

Creature Chorus contains 9 games that can be used with a touch screen, single switch, or mouse. Amusing animated characters train cause and effect, turn-taking, auditory awareness, visual tracking, discrete pointing, and choice-making.

First Words, First Words II, and First Verbs train 100 early developing nouns and 50 verbs. These programs offer the consistent, focused, and supportive environment that many people with disabilities require to learn an initial vocabulary.

Simple Sentence Structure is designed for individuals who have a core vocabulary of nouns and verbs but are having difficulty conveying meaning. This program helps children understand the importance of subject-verb-object order in simple sentences.

First Categories trains early categorization skills using 60 nouns in six categories: animals, food, body parts, clothing, furniture, and vehicles. There are four examples of each word (two illustrations and two photographs).

The language instruction programs feature our new Optimized Intervention® technology which automatically guides a student through the curriculum. Each program begins with a probe test which selects appropriate training material, and then continually adjusts the lesson delivery based on the student’s performance.
